Tips on How to Prevent Acne

Acne can be annoying. Scratch that. Acne can be sooo frustrating. You buy all the products and apply all the advice, but still don’t notice any major differences. Sometimes there are hidden causes of acne that are not so obvious. Based on my own experience and knowledge, I have below written hidden and sneaky causes of acne that may be under your nose (literally and figuratively).

  1. Your shampoo and conditioner. I feel like people are picking up on this but here it is anyways: your shampoo and conditioner may have ingredients that lead to creating acne on your face and/or body. I shampoo and condition first and THEN use body wash because the body wash cleanses any residue from shampoo and conditioner, leaving your skin clean from aforementioned acne.
  2. Not washing your pillowcases. I recommend washing them at least once a week to get rid of acne-causing bacteria. Also invest in satin or silk pillow cases because they are going to be more gentle on your skin, and reduce friction and irritation.
  3. Dairy. You may have a dairy sensitivity and it could be causing your acne. There hasn’t yet been many studies done that directly correlate dairy and acne. But search YouTube and Reddit and you’ll encounter a bunch of people stating and showing proof that ever since they cut out dairy, their skin not only got cleaner but also got their glow back. You may want to try eliminating dairy for a week and see if there is any major differences.
  4. Putting on hand lotion before bed. This only applies to those of us who sleep on our hands at night. Without really being aware, we slather products like hand creams that cause acne. Your best bet is to look for non-comedogenic products for your hands. Non-comedogenic is just a fancy science term that means a product has been proven to not congest the pores in your skin. Websites like http://www.acneclinicnyc.com are really good and useful. You just enter your product or brand, and it tells you if they are pore-clogging or not.
  5. Touching your face. I feel like this one is a more obvious one. Just try to become more aware.
  6. Reusing face towels. If you regularly use the same towel on your face, it may be leading to acne. The reason is that they not only collect bacteria use after use, but also especially if they are near the toilet, because air-born particles may travel. (yikes). I buy single use facial tissues. They are sturdy like paper towels but soft and luxurious. The one I use is by Clean Towels and can be found at Target and Amazon. (This is not sponsored by the way).

So these are all the tips that come to my mind. But if you like me to post more about these topics, I can go even more into detail. Let me know! ❤
