Everywhere you go people say the same thing about preventing wrinkles: religiously apply sunscreen/use Retinol/moisturize. But these are the un-talked about things to do to prevent wrinkles and they are not what you think:
- Sleep on your back. Constant pressure on one side of your face (or both sides if you toss and turn) may attribute to wrinkles. We’re always told to be gentle when washing our face because you don’t want to get wrinkles from washing too hard (especially around the eyes). Also told not to drag the face down when cleansing because (again) wrinkles. Newsflash: pushing and pulling your face while sleeping on your face during your 7-9 hours is causing them too. Try sleeping on your back.
- Water. Water. WATER. Drinking our H20 has so many benefits but most important is our SKIN. Mine’s literally glows up da wahoo when I drink water. We all have heard 8 cups as the goal, but now Physicians calculate it the following way: 0.5 to 1.0 ounces of water per every pound of body weight daily. P.S. I chill my water in the fridge so I am more inclined to drink it. This works especially in summer time weather.
- Wear driving gloves. A lot of people don’t realize why their hands are so wrinkly and their faces are not. Put cleansing balms, serums, essences, moisturizer and sunscreen on our faces all day everyday but what is the use if your age is showing up on your hands. They are cheap on Amazon. I think like $10.
- 2 Kiwi a day. Vitamin C is the key to skin health; It boosts collagen a.k.a improves skin elasticity which prevents sagging. Cirtus foods are touted for their vitamin C but the secret powerhouse of Vitamin C is in Kiwi. Just two a day gives you 100% of the daily value you need. Getting your C is a little tricky because ingesting all that acid from oranges, limes, lemon, grapefruit etc. can affect your tooth enamel. Kiwis are just so much healthier and easier (and tastier IMO).
- Omega 3 Supplement. Omega 3 is the only “skin supplement” I take. I generally don’t believe in skin supplements because the best way to get good skin is to eat well. However, I do trust Omega 3 supplements and here’s why: just like Vitamin C, they improve skin elasticity and provide hydration. Generally, Omega 3 supplements come from fish. However, if you are vegetarian or vegan there is an option for you: Algae plant Omega 3 supplements. An added plus is that, with Algae Omega 3s, you don’t get a fishy aftertaste like what often has been reported with Fish Omega 3s.
- Lukewarm or Cold Showers Only. My mom religiously takes hot showers. And I mean piping hot. Once out of the shower, I notice that her chest and neck are red. Not anything alarming right? Well she has just started to develop wrinkles on those areas. There is truth to the fact that says it is better to take lukewarm (or even better cold) showers. Ever since, I refuse to take hot showers.
- Shave. Everywhere. Your face too. No it won’t cause hair to grow back thick (I have been doing so for 7 years). Yes it causes the best form of exfoliation. Yes you get healthier skin because now you absorb your skin care products better. TIP: I would dial down on the chemical or physical exfoliating skin products while starting out to prevent irritation to the skin and the barrier.
- Buy a humidifier. Sleeping with a humidifier adds moisture to the air, preventing moisture loss on the skin= hydration while sleeping. They also help maintain a healthy skin barrier. If you suffer with psoriasis or eczema, they soothe irritation from those skin conditions as well.
- Invest in Satin (or silk) Pillowcases. Not only do they feel luxurious, they are considered excellent for skin health. They are less abrasive on the skin, are non-absorbent (meaning they don’t take away your night time skin products) and have changed the game in skincare overall.
These are all the tips that have worked for me. (For reference I am 37 but I look much younger). I would love to hear from you if you try any of these and found them useful on your skin journey! Love you, bye. ❤
